China's Big Earth Data supports UN SDGs

The Big Earth Data Science Engineering program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CASEarth) has been listed as a partner and one of the technical support institutions for the online platform of the Technology Facilitation Mechanism (TFM) to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (UN).

The CASEarth office told Science and Technology Daily on Sunday that the Big Earth Data program shows China's support for the Decade of Action on the Sustainable Development Goals and technological contributions to global sustainable development.

The Big Earth Data, launched on Jan. 1, 2018, is a category-A strategic leading technology program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). The program takes the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as a core task and is committed to providing advanced and effective Big Earth Data technology support for the realization of SDGs.

After the professional evaluation of the online platform of the UN TFM, the program is now one of the 24 platform partners. Others include renowned international organizations and science and research institutions, such as UNESCO's World Science Forum, the European Space Agency (ESA), the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC), and the United Nations University.

On the 70th anniversary of the United Nations (UN) in September 2015, heads of state and delegates gathered at the UN headquarters in New York and adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This comprehensive sustainability framework was built on the basis of the historical experiences of human society and a shared expectation for the future. It presents a blueprint for countries to pursue global sustainable development in the next 15 years.

In order to achieve the SDGs and effectively assess their progress with the full strength of science, technology, and innovation, the UN has established the TFM. The online platform of the TFM was officially launched during the United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), held from July 7 to 16. As one of the three major components of the UN TFM, it aims to build itself into a dynamic platform for the realization of SDGs and provide scientific information for politicians, technology professionals, businesses and individuals all over the world.

The two vaccines were developed respectively by Wuhan Institute of Biological Products Co., Ltd of Sinopharm and Sinovac Research & Development Co., Ltd together with research institutes.
