The State Council recently released a package of policies and measures to stabilize the economy, one of them emphasizing the healthy development of the platform economy.

The platform economy refers to the tendency for enterprises to increasingly move towards digital platforms to sell products or provide services. Through platforms, entrepreneurs, consumers, and the public can connect, share resources and do businesses.

The policy mentioned that it is necessary to take advantage of the role of the platform economy in stabilizing employment, and helping micro, small and medium-sized enterprises to grow.

"The platform economy is an important part of the nation's digital economy, and it plays an important role in improving the efficiency of resource allocation, boosting collaborative innovation, and promoting industrial upgrading," said Chen Jiachang, director of the high-tech department of Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), adding that the Ministry has supported platform-based enterprises to innovate by carrying out R&D and information infrastructure innovation demonstration projects.

In May, the CPPCC National Committee held a special meeting on promoting the development of the digital economy. Vice Premier Liu He pointed out that it is vital to support the sustainable and healthy development of the platform economy and private economy, and specific measures should be formulated to encourage platform enterprises to participate in major national sci-tech innovation projects.

MOST has been making efforts to motivate platform enterprises to accelerate R&D in artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, blockchain, operating systems and processors, and undertake national projects in those fields, according to Chen.

The national high-tech industrial development zones in different regions have also proposed concrete measures to advance the development of the platform economy.

In Beijing, the Zhongguancun Science Park supports JD.com, a leading enterprise in the platform economy, to carry out a demonstration project for the construction of a digital community. By exploring new application scenarios, the project aims to form a convenient digital community governance and service system.

The Hangzhou High-Tech Zone will build the pilot area for the innovative development of the digital economy. It has implemented the Digital Economy No. 1 Project, to introduce a number of high-level major projects focusing on AI, blockchain and big data. According to preliminary forecasts, the added value of core industries of the digital economy in the Zone will strive to exceed 180 billion RMB in 2022.
