More than 30 scientists and experts from countries that included China, Japan, Korea and Singapore attended (in person or online) the China-Japan High-level Expert Symposium on Biosystems Science in Public Health in Beijing on August 27.

This event was hosted by the Department of Foreign Expert Services, Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China (MOST) and Sakura Science Program Headquarters, Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). It aims to make vital contributions to developing innovative solutions for animal models of human disease challenges worldwide.

"As biosystems science and medical research step into new areas, there is a rising demand for animal models of human disease, which provide solutions to the limitation of medical ethics and abundant experimental material for human diseases research," said an official from Department of Foreign Expert Services of MOST in the keynote speech.

He said this is also an indispensable step in the development process of new vaccines and drugs. The research of major infectious diseases and complex human diseases needs to be supported by stable and effective animal models.

He hoped that all the experts could communicate freely, and share experiences and research results, and "contribute your wisdom to build a platform for scientific research and technological innovation, educational cooperation and people-to-people exchanges in the field of Biosystems Science in Public Health, as well as to build a community of common health for mankind."

Kishi Teruo, Director-General of Sakura Science Program Headquarters of JST emphasized the role that JST has been playing in promoting the sci-tech exchanges between China and Japan. He specially mentioned the China-Japan High-level Expert Symposium and other cooperative platforms JST set up for young scientists from China and Japan. All these efforts laid a solid foundation for sharing the research fruits and deepening future cooperation between China and Japan.

At the symposium, the keynote speech session and roundtable discussion session were established for in-depth discussion, focusing on the research related to creating animal models of human diseases and the maintenance, sharing and quality control of experimental animal resources.

Renowned experts from prestigious institutions in China and Japan were actively involved in sharing their research progress and experience.
